Many men suffer from enlarged breasts, known medically as gynecomastia, but commonly known as “man boobs”. Gynecomastia can be caused by a variety of issues including genetic factors, hypogonadism, malnutrition, cirrhosis, or otherwise.
Men of all sizes and shapes can experience “man boobs”, and it is not limited to those who are overweight or out of shape. Young men and even slim or fit men can also experience enlarged breast tissue. Many teenage boys even may experience teasing due to gynecomastia. It is important to know that gynecomastia sufferers are not alone, and there is help.
Many individuals who experience “man boobs” can feel self-conscious or embarrassed about the shape of their body. Men suffering from gynecomastia often will avoid taking off their shirts in public or in a locker room, and may instead opt to wear t-shirts at the beach or pool, whereas everyone else may go shirtless. It is important to note that most gynecomastia can be treated by treating the underlying cause. If gynecomastia is caused by an underlying medical condition, often treating that condition can make gynecomastia lessen or even disappear. Gynecomastia can be treated surgically in two ways:
- Liposuction – where the fatty tissue of the breast is removed via suction
- Mastectomy – where the breast gland tissue is removed surgically
