No matter how popular, cosmetic procedures like liposuction are still sometimes met with skepticism due to a lack of understanding about what’s actually involved. The following will, hopefully, shed some light on liposuction and its power to help women and men successfully shed unwanted fat cells.
What is Liposuction?
Power assisted liposuction, also referred to as suction-assisted lipectomy, is a common and effective cosmetic procedure that was developed to rid a specific area of the body of excess fat. By using suction, patients experience maximum results with minimal scarring.
So, how does liposuction work?
Simply put, liposuction breaks up fat cells which are then sucked out of the body via a special hollow instrument called a cannula.
How is a Liposuction Procedure Performed?
To start, a local anesthesia is injected into the target area, numbing it and also causing it to swell and become firmer. Popular targets for liposuction include the abdomen, arms, bra rolls, buttocks, hips, inner and outer thighs, knees, love handles, neck, and male breasts, which result from a condition known as gynecomastia.
Following anesthesia, the cannula is inserted under the skin where it breaks up fat cells. Afterwards, a high-pressure vacuum attached to the cannula pulls the broken fat cells out of the body. Sounds simple, but the results can be impressive.
That said, it’s important to realize that liposuction does not replace proper weight loss methods. Rather, it helps eliminate certain spots where fat has accumulated and seemingly remains resistant to a healthy diet and consistent exercise.
However, Dr. Sterling has treated patients who are not at their ideal weight, but who report fitting into better and often downsized clothes, following liposuction procedures.
Is liposuction something you should consider? Maybe you already have. Either way, give our office a call and request a consultation with Dr. Sterling to determine if this popular procedure can deliver the right results for your body.
